What is Cervical Cancer?
The cervix is a body part that connects the vagina and the uterus, and is an important part for giving birth.
It's a common cancer in the world where one woman dies every two minutes from the cervical cancer, and the 2nd most common cancer among Korean women.
Unlike other cancers, the cervical cancer is mainly caused by the infection of HPV rather than genetic reasons.
1. HPV
About 80 percent of women who are sexually active are infected by this virus more than once in their lives, and among the high-risk types associated with cancer, HPV type 16 and type 18 cause 70% of cervical cancers.
2. Preventive Method
The vaccine currently developed prevents up to 100% of HPV type 16 and 18, which are the main cause of the cervical cancer, and other types of viruses are reportedly prevented.
Therefore, HPV vaccination may prevent more than 70% of cervical cancers.
3. Gardasil
Gardasil is a vaccine manufactured by MSD USA which obtained FDA approval in 2006. Gardasil 9 is for HPV types 6, 11, 16, 18, 31, 33, 45, 52 and 58, and Gardasil 4 is for HPV types 6, 11, 16 and 18. The vaccine is used to prevent cervical cancer, vaginal cancer in situ, vulva cancer in situ, anal cancer, and oral cancer.
4. Cervarix
Cervarix is designed by GSK in the U.S. to prevent infection from HPV types 16 and 18.
Although this vaccine does not cover a wide range of viruses, but boosts the immune system response for a longer period of time as antibodies survive for a long thanks to the adjuvant (AS04).
5. Cervical Cancer Vaccination
- Subject to vaccination : Women between the ages of 10-55
- Vaccine type : Gardasil - MSD, Cervarix – GSK
- Number of injections : 3 times in total (Cervarix 0, 1, 6 months / Gardasil 0, 2, 6 months)
